Reason 4: Mastery of Strengths

Author: Adrianne Blake and Tan Huynh

Adrianne Blake “Within a classroom full of bright smiling faces and amongst the chitter chatter of excitement about sixth grade camp, sat one boy eager for math class to start. Lucas was busily working on another “quizzle,” solving complicated logic and reasoning problems just for fun. It was clear that his enthusiasm and aptitude for math came naturally, and I looked forward to keeping the momentum going throughout the next two years.

Lucas Little did I know that our paths would cross again almost ten years later! While catching up on how life has changed, I shared that I was working at a local bank within the lending department and raising my two children with my husband. Lucas was in his final year of college finishing up a degree in economics and looking for an internship in the banking industry. After a few laughs about the ‘old days,’ it occurred to me, that after all these years, Lucas’ passion for math was still alive and I would have the opportunity to coordinate an interview for him as a credit analyst.

It was such a pleasure seeing Lucas carve his own path within the financial industry, knowing that I helped foster his enjoyment for learning and math fundamentals in my class many years ago.”

Strengths Lead to Accomplishments

Having a teacher like Mrs. Blake can set students down a pathway where strength, passion, and profession are perfectly aligned. One of life’s ultimate fulfillments is loving what you do for a living.

Becoming a master of your trade takes time. But more importantly, it requires the help from master teachers to develop the correct skills. Every great athlete, artist, and scientist owe their mastery to having amazing coaches, mentors, or teachers starting at an early age. These masters inspire and challenge their students in ways that push them beyond the edge of their abilities.

Mastery of strength is one of the six pillars at Academy of the Renaissance.

Too often schools hold a belief that all subjects are equally important, regardless of individual’s interest, aptitude and passion. This can lead to student disengagement. We believe that students can gain a foundation in all subjects, through the lens of their strength, while developing their own unique skill set and passions in a way that traditional schools do not value.

All students possess unique strengths and are passionate about something. Our academy will identify these strengths and passion at an early age and help students carve their own pathway in education.

Focusing on strengths in our students will help them continue to enjoy education and prolong their curiosity about the world they live in. In fact, helping students use their strength in one course to overcome their struggles in another course have proven to be very successful! As students progress through school, we will help them be successful by tailoring a curriculum centered around their strengths and passion.

Ultimately, students in high school will pair with industry masters where they will learn how to apply their academic skills towards real world experiences. Their schoolwork is not only graded by a teacher’s set of criteria, but also subjected to industry standards. Schoolwork now has a public audience.

Upon graduation, students will have developed a portfolio of tangible accomplishments.

Imagine a student publishing his or her first novel in eleventh grade.

Imagine a student holding a patent to an invention in tenth grade.

Imagine a group of students holding a copyright to a music album by graduation.

When passion is aligned with strength, magic happens!
